Swedish Boot Mafia does Sophia Somajo

Here's the first installment in our Swedish Boot Mafia series.

Swedish Boot Mafia consists of Copycat, Divide & Kreate, and Nachoman, and is our little side project for playing around with all things Swedish - and more.

The first artist to get the Swedish Boot Mafia treatment is
Sophia Somajo.

Sophia Somajo may very well champion Robyn for the title as Sweden's hottest electro soul/R&B star. Not only does she produce oustanding music herself; she writes stuff for other artists as well and has collaborated with Adam Tensta, Vincent and Juvelen just to name a few.

Swedish Boot Mafia decided to give her lovely "I-rony" the onceover.

And it goes a little something like this:

Make sure you follow the Swedish Boot Mafia blog for more exciting news.

I Was Made for a Heavy Cross
[Kiss vs Gossip]

One of my absolute fave tracks of last year - one of my fave albums in fact - was Gossip's killer tune "Heavy cross" and their album "Music for Men". I'm crazy in love with Beth Ditto's passion, voice and attitude. And I just couldn't get enough of that track. In fact, I kinda OD:d on it, not to mention all the remixes... So when Culture Bully asked me to do a mash-up for their "Mashed 2009", my mind was pretty set from the start.

There's always been something about Gossip reminding me of Kiss, especially Kiss' classic "I was made for lovin' you". It seems as if all her life - in a wide number of tracks - Beth Ditto wanted to re-create that very track, groove and feel. On their latest album, she even rather unashamedly nicked the entire chorus as well (in the track "2012"). So I thought I'd help her out...

Here's "I Was Made for a Heavy Cross (A Copycat Mash)"

Kiss - I was made for lovin' you
Gossip - Heavy cross

I Was Made for a Heavy Cross -
Mashup of the week on Popbytes!

Happy to share with you that my latest mash-up was made "Mashup of the week" over at Popbytes by LA:s DJ Paul.V - of Smash Mix fame. Here's what Paul has to say about it:

"...a superb mashup that mixes something a little old, and something kind of new [...] Sweden's Copycat draws perfect parallel lines from the disco-rock of yore, to the indie-dance of now."

Very honoured - and very happy. Thank you very much Paul and Popbytes!

Uploaded the tune to the player above. Try it, will you?

Copycat on Culture Bully's Mashed 2009

Following the success of last year's Mashed 2008, Culture Bully once again presents some of the best tunes from the year before in slightly appropriated versions.

Happy to say I got an invite this year as well. Even more happy to say I was commissioned to do the artwork. Not only for the Mashed 2009 album, but for all the year, decade and whatnot lists/charts etc. for 2009.

What's that? My remix? Oh, yes... sorry... I went for a combo of Gossip's "Heavy Cross" and Kiss' classic "I was made for loving you".

Head over to Culture Bully to catch up with some of the coolest tunes of the year. Tell them I said hi!

Mashstix' sMASHed award & Top 20 2009!

Some good news from the Mashstix camp as well! Seems as if my "Daddy's song" - a blend of Glasvegas' "Daddy's gone" and Elton John's "Your song" made it to their Top 20 of 2009!

I must say I'm more than a little surprised. It's a very special song for me, without fancy schmancy production tricks. But I suppose it struck a chord with the listeneres as well.

Very honoured. Thank you very much. It means a lot to me.

My "The Look of the Tiger" (ABC vs Survivor) was also awarded the "Mashstix sMashed Award" - a reward that goes out to tunes
that have received a minimum average vote of 4.0 on the Mashstix site and that honors 3 main qualities ... 1) Excellence in musical production, 2) Popularity of dj in the scene and 3) djs promotional abilities.

Somehow, I managed to qualify anyway...

Thanks to the good folks @Mashstix! Keep up your tremendous work!

The tracks? Check the player above - listen/download from there.

Copycat remixes Billie Ray Martin
and Cabaret Voltaire!

So here's some exciting news. A few months back I was asked to remix a song for Billie Ray Martin's Crackdown Project, in which she join forces with Cabaret Voltaire front man, Stephen Mallinder, and takes two of CV's best known tunes on a splendid disco ride. Martini Broes and Lusty Zanzibar are also aboard - as is David Harrow, the co-writer behind "Your loving arms", Billie Ray Martin's worldwide smash hit and dance classic from the 90s.

I had a go at Billie Ray's powerful interpretation of "Just Fascination" and transformed it into my usual mish mash of epic, cosmic, melancholy electro disco and pop.

Apparently, it went down well in the BRM camp, as she placed it on the #1 spot on her personal top 10 for December:

Interested in what it sounds like? Hold your breath a few more weeks - and visit your favorite digital outlet, worldwide, on Feb 15. Make sure to check out the other remixes as well - from among others a few of my very good dj/producer friends, including Celebrity Murder Party, Divide & Kreate, Dunproofin', Flying White Dots, PhilRetroSpector, and Year Zero.

Read more about the project in this press release, this little booklet - or visit Billie Ray Martin on MySpace.

Thanks to Simon Iddol for making this happen!

Copycat's Top 20 2009 @ AudioPorn Central

While we're at it, here's my personal Top 20 from all those massive tunes we posted over at AudioPorn Central 2009. For the official, aggregated & full list of APC's fave tunes 2009 - have a look here.

This list was compiled a few days before x-mas. As usual a lot of stuff happened the very last days of the decade, with a lot of great new tunes being posted/released. Let me get back to you in case I find something that knocks me out.

Here we go:

#01 jj – Things will never be the same again [link]
Best song of the year – IMHO. Lovely, dreamy, esoteric pop with vibes reminding me of some of Simon & Garfunkel’s finest moments.

#02 Fever Ray – Seven (The Twelves Remix) [link]
The Twelves strike again! Fever Ray goes disco. My fave remix of the year!

#03 Annie – Antonio (Designer Drugs Remix) [link]
The unbelievable Designer Drugs hook up with Norwegian electro disco godmother Annie. Pure bliss!
#04 Pony Pony Run Run – Hey You (PPRR dance remix) [link]
Still dead crazy about this 80s tinged dance remix of PPRR’s ”Hey You”. Damn, why didn’t I think of it myself…
#05 Röyksopp ft. Robyn – The Girl and the Robot [link]
I love Röyksopp. I adore Robyn. Needs be, I’d die for this tune.
#06 The Found Sound Orchestra – Memorabilica [link]
I’m still wondering: who the fuck are The Avalanches ??!!
#07 Divide & Kreate – Sex Diary [link]
Yazoo meets Kings of Leon, yeah, I know… But it works! My absolute fave mashup this year. Amen!
#08 The xx – Shelter (Them Jeans drum edit) [link]
The XX are so cool it defies any description. This is a lovely track that hasn’t left my playlist since I first laid my hands on it.
#09 The Juan Maclean – One Day (Original version) [link]
Brilliant minimal electrodisco making me do my infamous epileptic pogo. Think Elaine in Seinfeld…
#10 Gossip – Heavy Cross [link]
Instant classic. I [heart] Beth.
#11 Cinnamon Chasers – Luv Deluxe [link]
Excellent, chilled dreamy electro with one of the best videos of the year.
#12 Girls – Lust for Life [link]
I’ve a penchant for carefree, summery pop like this – lust for life, indeed.
#13 Manix – Feel Real Good (Celebrity Murder Party Remix) [link]
Think Deadmau5, think Swedish House Mafia. Come to think of it – don’t think at all. Strike an air piano pose – get with the programme. And dance!
#14 Röyksopp – This Must Be It (Rex The Dog K-DART Remix) [link]
How can you go wrong with an equation comprising Röyksopp, Rex the Dog AND Karin??!!
#15 The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Come Saturday [link]
Noisy pop punk combo from Brooklyn, NY with a hint of Belle & Sebastian, My Bloody Valentine – and the Ramones. Fab!
#16
Guilty Pleasures Volume Four / Fuck Our Boyfriends Too [link]
AudioPorn All Stars VS Toy Toy. Result? Some of the best remixes 2009!
#17 Apollo Zero – When Radioactive Doves Cry (Prince/Kraftwerk/PSB) [link]
One of those mash-ups you know you gonna love just by seeing the title. Simply brilliant.
#18 Fever Ray – When I Grow Up (Dan Lissvik remix) [link]
Studio’s Dan Lissvik takes the dark Fever Ray tale to Ibiza, for a chil out session. God, I miss Cala Bassa… Sick!
#19 Saint Etienne – Only Love Can Break Your Heart
(Richard X Extended Vocal mix) [link]
Sarah Cracknell’s been breaking my heart from the word go. Nothing’s changed – except that the X did a splendid remix!
#20 Mando Diao – Dance with somebody [link]
Brilliant energy kick from Sweden’s finest rock’n'roll outfit. Deffo makes me wanna…erm… dance with somebody.
