Copycat on Toronto Star's Anti-Hit List

Happy to announce that my latest remix, "Stand by for the floor" (Hot Chip vs Ben E King), made it to no. 7 on Toronto Star's Anti-Hit List. Hell, it even managed to beat the latest single from good ol' Mozfather, a dear long-time fave of mine.

Says the editor, Mr John Sakamoto:

"Stand by for the floor" - On which DJ Copycat, the mind behind last year's standout "Fade to Pretty Vacant" mash-up, pairs up the former's "Ready for the Floor" (from upcoming Made in the Dark album) and the latter's enduring "Stand by Me" (a.k.a. that song sampled on Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls"). The result is a propulsive dancefloor track imbued with nostalgic melancholy.

Thank you John, and thank you Toronto Star.

Here's the track in case you missed it.

Fade to pretty vacant - Bootleg of the year

You might know that the World Famous Audio Hacker's been keeping scores on the "Most active bootlegs of the year". Yesterday he published the final list for 2007.

Happy to say that this cat's "Fade to pretty vacant" - a blend of Visage, Sex Pistols, Charlatans, Nouvelle Vague, and Fun Lovin Criminals made it all the way to the top.

At #13 you'll find another one of my boots, a personal favorite in fact, "Ever fallen in love with a martyr?" (Depeche Mode's "Martyr", Nouvelle Vague's cover of "Ever fallen in love", and the Reverberi Brothers' "Nell cimitero del Tuscon", the track that Gnarls Barkley sampled for their monster hit, "Crazy").

Also "Knowing the rhythm is right" (ABBA x 2 vs Nelly Furtado vs Sagi Rei and more) and "I feel love is a stranger" (Eurythmics vs Donna Summer) are among the top 100. As are the compilations Bootwerk - A tribute to Kraftwerk and Block Rockin Boots - A tribute to the Chemical Brothers; both with contributions from me.

Hot Chip vs. Ben E King - "Stand by for the floor"

I'm in love.

Been listening to the new Hot Chip for a while now - especially "Ready for the floor" - driving mrs. Cat crazy. One day I was standing in the shower - with the song on. While pogoing away amidst my ablutions, I could hear the muffled, filtered sound of the track, mainly the bassline. That's when I got this idea.

The bass chord progression in the chorus reminded me very much of Ben E King's "Stand by me". Naturally, I had to look into the matter. Unfortunately that part wasn't instrumental in any of the (many) mixes I had - so I had to improvise. Or compromise, might be a better word...

I de-constructed the lot - and tried to build it up again in my usual half-arsed way, with quite some appropriation and effing up along the way, mind you. But finallly I managed to get it somewhere near what I was aiming for.

Here's the result. It's not 'ready' anymore - it's "stand by". Hope you like. And... do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it NOW! ;-)

- Stand by for the floor (A Copycat Mash)
